Robbery suspect dead after gunfight with officer, Baltimore County police say

WOODLAWN — An armed robbery suspect was found dead and an officer was injured after an exchange of gunfire early Monday, Baltimore County police said.

Officers responded to Windsor Mill Road around 2 a.m. for an armed robbery and police said in a news release that their preliminary investigation found that the fleeing suspects were involved in a crash a few blocks away and bailed out of the vehicle.

One officer found one of the suspects nearby and the two exchanged gunfire, police said. The officer wasn’t shot, but police said he was injured during the exchange and taken to an area hospital. Police dogs later found one of the suspects dead, police said.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office’s Independent Investigations Division and Maryland State Police will conduct the investigation into the officer’s conduct with assistance from county police.

That investigation is one of the first two that the Independent Investigations Division is conducting under a new law that took effect this month as part of a package of police reform legislation in the state. Under the new law, the unit investigates all deaths of civilians involving police in the state.

The Independent Investigations Division is also is investigating a single-vehicle crash after a police pursuit early Saturday in Baltimore County.

Police officials did not immediately have details about the races of the officer or suspects in the Monday incident.
