Dr. Helen Tuel
Therapeutic and Recreational Ridingcenter Inc.
Dr. Helen Tuel strives to lift individuals through the power of therapeutic horseback riding, an activity that can help improve motor skills, strength, balance and quality of life. The Howard County-based facility caters to adults and children alike with a wide range of physical, mentaland emotional disabilities.
“We treat everyone equally,” Tuel said. “We look for passion and drive to make the world a better place. We do not see the color of one’s skin or physical or mental challenges. We see the person as a person who desires to change our world to be better than yesterday.”
Since its founding more than 30 years ago, TRRC has expanded its devoted team of certified instructors, who seek to offer encouragement to riders looking to overcome the challenges they face in everyday life.
“Once here, instructors fall in love with our families and the riders,” Tuel said. “Instructors keep the bar high and change that bar often to be even higher for the riders to reach.”
Tuel earned a doctorate in education administration researching the benefit of play in learning at Vanderbilt University. According to TRRC’s web site, it was there that Tuel “realized the value of therapeutic horseback riding.”
“We look for passion and drive to make the world a better place. We do not see the color of one’s skin or physical or mental challenges. We see the person, as a person who desires to change our world to be better than yesterday.”
