Jon Laria

Managing Partner, Baltimore
Ballard Spahr LLP

Jon Laria has provided counsel for some of Baltimore’s most prominent development projects and represents owners, investors and lenders in commercial real estate transactions. Before becoming an attorney, he worked in real estate development but found his passion was in public policy and public affairs.

“While my practice has always included real estate, many of the projects involve public participation, often with policy implications,” Laria said. “I really enjoy the intersection of the private and public sectors, and fortunately my professional career and my civic commitments frequently put me at that intersection.”

He is the founding chair of the Maryland Sustainable Growth Commission, the successor organization to the state’s Task Force on the Future for Growth and Development, which he also chaired.

He is interested in keeping the profession strong with training, mentoring, recruitment, retention and creating an overall professional environment.

As a testament to those relationships, Laria still counts himself fortunate to have clerked for Judge Howard Chasanow on the Maryland Court of Appeals and describes it as one of the best years of his life. Laria and Chasanow would go on to become friends, and now Laria has been managing partner at Ballard Spahr LLP’s Baltimore office for more than a decade.

He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law and Johns Hopkins University.
