What is the biggest challenge facing the legal profession today?

The biggest challenge facing the legal profession today is the decentralization of providers of legal advice. In the past, clients only had one outlet to seek legal advice, the law firm. Now, there are many competing providers of legal services, including in house counsel, accounting firms, consulting firms, online legal platforms, etc. This significantly increases the competition for attracting new clients, encouraging us to constantly reexamine the effectiveness and efficiency with which we deliver legal services.

What advice would you offer anyone interested in a legal career?

Earning a legal degree requires a tremendous investment of both time and money. I would urge anyone interested in becoming an attorney to think about how they plan to use their degree – what type of law interests them, what do they hope to accomplish through their career, etc. They should talk to lawyers who are successfully doing what they want to do and ask them to share the pros and cons, to describe some typical client/transactions and give honest feedback about whether the satisfaction their job provides is worth the investment they made to get there.
