Jeremy Baker

Chief of Staff
Maryland Speaker of the House

Jeremy Baker has only worked as chief of staff to Maryland House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones since the start of this year, but he is no stranger to that office.

Baker first began working in the speaker’s office in 2008. He left in 2012 to work in Howard County government and later the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, but returned to the speaker’s office as a senior adviser in 2015.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

Passing marriage equality will always be one of the most memorable moments for everyone involved. I’ll never forget some of the conversations we had as we whipped the votes. Recently, I am proud of the work I’ve done with the incredible leadership of the Health and Government Operations Committee as it shored up Maryland’s individual market and made health insurance more affordable and accessible for Maryland families.

What is the most important life lesson you learned?

Patience. It’s a critical component to showing respect, building a successful team and creating the kind of lasting relationships that give life meaning.

What do you do for fun and why?

I coach coed youth rugby. Rugby is the ultimate team sport. Everyone carries the ball, everyone tackles and everyone’s role is critical to success. I really enjoy helping the kids develop skills, find success and overcome challenges. Plus, 10-year old kids are hilarious.
