Nancy J. King
State Senator – Dist. 39
Maryland Senate Majority Leader
As a Maryland senator for nearly 15 years and the current Senate Majority Leader, Nancy J. King is most proud of her work to improve the state’s public education system, which started when her own children began attending Montgomery County public schools.
King began volunteering within the school system at this time and her passion for education led her to many leadership roles, one of which being the president of the Montgomery County Board of Education.
Representing District 39, King has helped pass laws ensuring professional development opportunities for teachers and allowing libraries to license e-books and other digital content to consumers. She has also emphasized the importance of pre-K programs throughout her time as senator.
“In order to succeed in school, children need a strong foundation in their most formative birth to five years,” she said.
What’s is the most important life lesson you learned?
From a very young age, it was instilled in me that the best way to move forward in this world is to work hard and be kind. I have done my best to stick to those tenants, and in the Maryland Legislature I have worked to forge relationships with all my colleagues to achieve the goals that are important to me.
