In his role as provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Johns Hopkins University, Sunil Kumar, Ph.D. has focused on increasing inter-divisional research and education collaborations, recruiting distinguished faculty to the higher education institution, leading the Student Services Excellence Initiative, strengthening career services and advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

Before joining Johns Hopkins in 2016, Kumar had previously served as dean of the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and the George Pratt Shultz Professor of Operations Management. Over a nearly 15-year period, he taught at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business as the Fred H. Merrill Professor of Operations, Information and Technology, and served as senior associate dean for academic affairs overseeing the master’s of business administration program.

A noted expert on operations management and research, Kumar’s studies include performance evaluation and control of manufacturing systems, service operations and communications networks.

Kumar earned a doctorate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds a master of engineering degree in computer science and automation from the Indian Institute of Science and a Bachelor of Engineering from Mangalore University.
