Twenty years after she left her native Trinidad and arrived in this country with only two suitcases and $300, Marlene Mahipat had earned her doctorate in chiropractice and a master’s degree in pharmacological science with an emphasis in medical cannabis from the University of Maryland school of pharmacy.
Twenty or so years after that, she has racked up an impressive number of achievements – foremost among them running her own chiropractic practice, in Randallstown, Mediquest LLC, a practice that focuses on a holistic approach to wellness through nutritional guidance, genetic testing and more.
“My proudest accomplishment is being a minority business owner and growing my practice, without investor capital, over the last 20 years to where my business is able to fund both of my nonprofit organizations,” she said. “Over the last 20 years I have helped thousands of children, homeless,
elderly, disabled people and animals.”
Those nonprofits are Helping Orphans Prosper Everywhere (HOPE) which assists children and families in need, including the homeless, elderly and disabled, and People. Letting Every Animal Survive Euthanasia (PLEASE) which focuses on helping otherwise healthy animals from being put to sleep and helping low-income clients with pets pay their food and veterinary bills.
“I continue to be passionate about helping people and animals in need,” Mahipat said. “I offer a voice for those without one, like children, the homeless and animals. I offer a mentorship program for children in need through education.
“I use my influence to help by utilizing my network and resources from years of experience.”
