Dr. Meagan Deming found it incredibly humbling to impact the course of the pandemic through her role in COVID-19 vaccine research.
She served as vice chair of the mix-and-match COVID-19 vaccine trial, a collaboration between investigators at the UMSOM’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health and the Institute of Human Virology.
“This mix-and-match trial had an incredible impact on Americans’ understanding of booster vaccines, and by allowing individuals to switch between vaccines for their booster doses which increased access to COVID-19 vaccines for Americans and others worldwide,” Deming said. “Our research also continues to inform national policy and our understanding of booster vaccines for COVID-19 and emerging variants.”
Deming earned her M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Swarthmore College. While at the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, she was named 2018 Fellow Teacher of the Year.
Since 2020, she has served as an ad-hoc reviewer for Vaccine, Annals of the American Thoracic Society’s Journal of Infectious Diseases, Lancet-Microbe, and Clinical Infectious Diseases. Deming has also served as a voting member of the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium COVID-19 Expert Working Group.
She is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
“I’m truly honored to have been named amongst this exceptional group of young female leaders,” Deming said. “These women are trailblazers who will have a lasting impact professionally and within their communities.”
