A refugee from Romania, Oana Brooks realized her dream of becoming a lawyer when she moved to the United States and graduated from the University of Maryland Francis King Cary School of Law in 2006. She has called Baltimore her home for nearly 20 years.
From 2007 to 2015, Brooks was an assistant state’s attorney for Baltimore where she prosecuted hundreds of cases, including murders, felony sexual offenses, narcotics offenses and more, warranting numerous promotions. In 2016, she opened Brookslaw LLC in Baltimore.
Brooks also has experience conducting campus and workplace investigations into allegations of discrimination, sexual assault and sexual harassment, having served as an equity compliance investigator for the Johns Hopkins University’s Office of Institutional Equity.
Passionate about her community and giving back, she is a past president and current member of the Junior League of Baltimore Inc., a leadership organization dedicated to developing women and girls into civic and professional leaders, among other groups.
What’s the most important thing you do in your job?
Fight to protect my clients’ rights and to do all I can to ensure that they are treated fairly.
What is one aspect of your profession you would like to change?
Make it more investigatory in nature and less adversarial; design the system to truly prioritize finding the truth, not just reward aggressive lawyering.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
Public affairs (political consulting and crisis management).
