Sheldon Stein

President & CEO
Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital

“Serving the Baltimore community alongside our committed staff has been an honor and a privilege.”
– Sheldon Stein

Over his 20 years leading the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, Sheldon Stein’s north star has been to define and embed the value of caring into all facets of hospital life.

The CARES values he championed demonstrate the staff’s commitment to caring about the children and families they serve, their staff, and their community, he said.

“I attribute my success to the passionate team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, and support staff caring for these children,” Stein said. “Serving the Baltimore community alongside our committed staff has been an honor and a privilege.”

Stein has been in the health care field for over 50 years, 28 of them at Mt. Washington. He retired last month. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my time here and close my career,” he said about the ICON award.

This year, the hospital launched the largest fundraising campaign in the hospital’s 100-year history: Hope Heal Grow: The Centennial Campaign for MWPH. The $15 million campaign will be used to expand and grow the hospital and invest in the future of Maryland’s children through the funding of new programs and innovative technologies.

In 2006, Stein played a pivotal role in establishing the joint ownership of Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital with two leading academic medical systems: the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

One legacy he hopes will remain from his career is creating an environment where employees feel safe to share their feedback. “I also prioritized hiring very competent people and empowering them to own their business areas,” Stein said. “By allowing my team to create their systems and processes, we gained insights into our successes and failures and tweaked and improved our business model as needed.”
