For more than 20 years, J. Steven “Steve” Wise has been representing a diverse group of clients before the Maryland General Assembly and state agencies. His clients include trade associations and alcoholic beverage, insurance, gaming health, telecommunications and environmental companies. Wise’s main legal focus is on administrative law and regulatory matters and regularly represents his clients in licensing and disciplinary proceedings.
What is the most valuable habit you have developed?
Learning as much as possible about a client’s subject matter. You have to understand it well enough that when a legislator stops you in the halls of the General Assembly, asks a question under time pressure and there’s not time to consult with the client, you can answer based on what you’ve learned.
What is the most difficult lesson you have learned?
Always let a legislator know when you have a client that opposes their legislation. About 20 years ago I failed to give a legislator a heads up and I still remember the lecture I got in return.
What is the biggest challenge facing government leaders in Maryland?
The national political climate and the daily effort by some to drive people further apart. There is a lot more collegiality among legislators at the state level than nationally, but the national tone does carry over at times, making it harder to find middle ground.
