Anthony L. Jenkins, Ph.D.
President, Coppin State University
With a focus on creating opportunities for all, especially those from underrepresented communities, Anthony L. Jenkins, Ph.D., has served as president of Coppin State since May 2020.
During his tenure, Jenkins has worked to expand the higher education institution’s academic portfolio through developing and implementing sought-after offerings for traditional students as well as adult learners.
A U.S. Army veteran, Jenkins is the first generation of his family to graduate college. Over his career, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Fayetteville State University, a master’s degree from North Carolina Central University and a doctorate from Virginia Tech.
Jenkins gives his time to a number of organizations including serving on the board of director for the Hippodrome Foundation and Maryland Zoological Society.
What’s the most important thing you do in your job?
To ensure Coppin State remains a leader in urban higher education that expands access and opportunities to all students.
Who was your most significant mentor and what did you learn from that person?
Dr. Phyllis Ray. She exposed me to the professional and career pathways of higher education. Moreover, Dr. Ray helped me design a framework to become a university president.
