What is your most significant accomplishment?
In 2014, I decided to join the MedStar Medical Group as the vice president of operations. At the time, the medical group did not exist. The formation of a single provider group within MedStar Health was a strategic priority and there was significant work to be done. As a member of the initial team to work in the medical group, one of the opportunities we identified early on was that we had a disparate group of primary care practice leaders who had varying levels of management and leadership skill. We decided to launch the Leadership Development Forum (LDF).
The LDF was a collaboration between operations and human resources where we created quarterly day-long education sessions to enhance knowledge in technical skills (i.e., budgeting, human resources, scheduling) and leadership skills (i.e., emotional intelligence, crucial conversations). The LDF included team-building exercises, classroom instruction, role playing and even had a book club component. These events were designed to be high energy, interactive and fun. Over time, we expanded the LDF beyond primary care to leaders in other specialty areas.
