Karen Lewis Young

State Senator, District 3
Maryland General Assembly

You have made a significant impact on healthcare in the state during your career. Can you highlight some of your most significant accomplishments?

I am proud of my role in getting major legislation passed to make health care more affordable and accessible as well as legislation that helps us to move towards equal pay.

The Hospital Patient’s Bill of Rights passed the Maryland General Assembly unanimously in 2019 and was signed into law by then-Gov. Larry Hogan — an extraordinary example of bipartisanship. I was the House of Delegates sponsor of this legislation, which protects and empowers all Maryland health care consumers and literally impacts every person in the state.

I was also the lead sponsor on a Behavioral Health bill to establish the 9-8-8 Trust Fund to designate and maintain 988 as the universal telephone number for mental health crisis hotline and suicide prevention. I have also been a fierce advocate for victims of sexual abuse and for equity for women.
