What is your most significant professional accomplishment?
I consider the Leadership in Law recognition I received from the Daily Record in 2017 my most significant professional accomplishment because of my ongoing commitment to mentoring less experienced attorneys.
How have you mentored others?
Mentoring remains an integral and gratifying part of my professional and personal life. One example of mentoring outside of those who report directly to me is my involvement in the Maryland State Bar Association’s Mock Trial Competition where I mentor high school students who have expressed interest in the law.
“For several years, Ms. Settles has volunteered her time and talent as chair of the Baltimore County Bar Association’s Civics and Law Academy, which facilitates dialogue between lawyers, judges and local high school students with the goal of promoting a better understanding of the law and our civic obligations,” said Vicki Ballou-Watts, judge for the Circuit Court for Baltimore County. “She has also served as a volunteer with the Maryland State Bar Association’s (MSBA) Mock Trial Competition. The MSBA program helps mentor high school students who have an interest in the law.”
“She is a mentor to young women in the legal field and in the local community,” said Mary Roby Sanders, partner at Turnbull, Nicholson & Sanders, P.A. “She sets a wonderful example for these women of how to give back to the community while supporting the roles of women.”
What is your most significant personal accomplishment?
My steadfast faith in God and devotion to family remain the most significant of my personal accomplishments. Balancing a successful litigation practice while simultaneously serving in various leadership capacities in professional legal and civic organizations in the Baltimore County community is also of significant importance.
