McDaniel College has been awarded $580,100 from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation to purchase new scientific equipment for research and teaching in the institution’s biology, chemistry and health sciences departments, school officials announced Monday.

The four-year grant will go toward expanding access to cutting-edge research and instructional tools for students taking general and advanced courses in the aforesaid programs, according to a release.

The funding also offers project opportunities for student participants in McDaniel’s Student-Faculty Collaborative Summer Research program.

Equipment that McDaniel plans to purchase include a virtual 3D anatomy visualization Anatomage Table, a computing and lab, advanced microscopes and more.

“McDaniel will be able to add new scientific equipment required for lab and research experiences and create more high-quality innovative and interdisciplinary opportunities for students,” McDaniel President Julia Jasken said in a statement.

“This investment in the student and faculty experience comes at the perfect time, enabling us to build on past successes to enhance student learning and, positioning McDaniel as a leader in liberal arts-based education.”

McDaniel has added more than a dozen new undergraduate majors aiming to prepare students for careers in emerging fields, including STEM majors in biochemistry, biomedical science, health sciences and nursing, according to a school release.
