Gateway Maryland
Erin K. Lamb, Ph.D., president and CEO of Gateway Maryland, turned the organization’s mission into measurable community impact by modernizing the $11.8 million nonprofit and driving 72% organic revenue growth while expanding services for people with communication barriers across the Baltimore-metro area. Under her leadership, programs have surged, with school enrollment increasing 255% and clinical reach growing 43%, sustained by upgrades in technology, finance, human resources and facility security that ensure efficiency, compliance and scale.
A connector and policy advocate, Lamb forges cross-sector partnerships aimed at removing barriers to health care and education for underserved individuals. Her approach to leadership has become more intuitive and personal over time, shaped by experience and relationships that have changed how she sees the world. She describes her style as rooted in flexibility and openness, meeting people where they are and adapting to what the moment calls for.
Running has served as a form of moving meditation for Lamb for approximately 17 years, a practice she says is often where her best thinking happens. Her commitment to growth has taken many forms, from pursuing a Ph.D. to participating in leadership development to saying yes to a coffee invitation that might lead to a new perspective or relationship. She has also learned that growth does not come only from doing more — it also comes from making space to reflect and process.
Drawing on lived experience and low demand parenting practices, Lamb founded a peer network for moms and caregivers of teens with pathological demand avoidance autism and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. The network provides a judgment-free space to share resources, problem-solve and normalize the reality that these complex conditions consume enormous mental and household bandwidth. Gratitude and serendipity are concepts she holds as central to the group’s focus.
One leadership lesson that has shaped her came from navigating a period of organizational change where she focused on process, structure and outcomes without fully attending to the emotional experience of those involved. The experience reinforced that there is no such thing as unemotional change, and that relationships matter more than anything during times of uncertainty. “Life isn’t meant to be a series of checkboxes or lists to complete,” Lamb said. “It’s about joy, peace, and intentionally creating a life of choice.”
