Jason M. St. John was reelected in January 2026 to a second four-year term as managing partner of Saul Ewing LLP, where he guides the strategic focus, growth and operations of a firm with 18 offices across the United States. His path to that role was built through years of expanding responsibility, including service on the executive committee, leadership of the litigation practice as chair and vice chair, roles as Baltimore vice office managing partner and hiring partner, and membership on the attorney evaluation committee. He served as lead integration partner for the firm’s 2017 merger with Arnstein & Lehr and as managing partner during the 2023 combination with Freeman Freeman & Smiley.

Since his initial election to the top post in January 2022, St. John has paired firm strategy with deep investment in the people who power it. He launched the nationally recognized “4+4” hybrid work plan, asking attorneys and business professionals to gather in the office on Wednesdays and four additional days each month. He established a director of coaching and well-being position to lead the firm’s inaugural Well-Being Resource Group, and he spearheaded a DEI strategic plan designed to measure progress and report results.

His attraction to the profession traces back to the privilege of representing clients as a trial lawyer, standing with them in their most challenging moments. That experience, he says, taught him to lead with clarity, preparation and a deep respect for the people who rely on him. He believes the profession is at its best when guided by integrity, empathy and a commitment to community, and he views leadership as leaving people, institutions and communities stronger than he found them.

That outlook is shaped most by his wife, Toni St. John, whom he met in law school in the late 1990s. Her clarity, encouragement and steady perspective influence how he shows up for colleagues and clients each day.

St. John extends that ethos into community service as chair of the Baltimore County Judicial Nominating Commission, a member of the Greater Baltimore Committee Board of Directors, immediate past chair of the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore Board of Trustees, incoming vice president of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law Board of Visitors and a member of the Leadership Counsel on Legal Diversity Board of Directors. He finds particular meaning in the Maryland Zoo’s work at the intersection of conservation and sustainability, an institution that brings joy today while helping safeguard the natural world for the future. He has also mentored dozens of attorneys through formal programs at Maryland Carey Law and Saul Ewing, and he previously taught pre-trial civil litigation and appellate advocacy as an adjunct professor at the law school.
