As Baltimore office managing partner at McGuireWoods LLP, Melissa O. Martinez represents Fortune 100 companies in high-stakes commercial and patent litigation, with a practice spanning contracts, business and environmental torts, fiduciary matters, civil rights, redistricting and financial services litigation. Within the firm, she also chairs the Asian Lawyers Network, co-chairs the Consumer & Retail Financial Product Litigation Subteam and serves on the Appellate Justice Initiative steering committee.

Martinez’s journey to the law is defined by her commitment to advocacy and education. She immigrated to Baltimore from the Philippines at age 9 without knowing English, mastered the language and earned a full scholarship to Notre Dame of Maryland University, where she graduated summa cum laude in physics — a technical foundation that continues to inform her patent litigation work. Her trajectory toward the legal profession crystallized as a Fulbright Fellow in the Philippines, where, moved by her grandmother’s struggle to afford essential medication, she researched the impact of intellectual property laws on pharmaceutical accessibility at the University of the Philippines School of Law. The experience drew her back to the University of Maryland’s Francis King Carey School of Law, where she earned the William P. Cunningham Award for Exceptional Achievement and Service.

Before joining McGuireWoods in 2012, Martinez clerked for the Hon. Andre M. Davis in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Her move to the firm allowed her to expand beyond patents into a broad range of complex civil litigation matters, from construction law to civil rights, consumer financial services and class actions — work that has sustained her curiosity and continually exposed her to new industries and concepts.

Martinez draws daily inspiration from her parents, immigrants whose pursuit of a better life was fueled by hard work, diligence and a love of education. Sepia photographs of her grandparents and parents as children in post-WWII Manila sit prominently on her office bookshelf, a daily reminder of her roots and a prompt to bring her best to every endeavor. A staunch believer in the duty of lawyers to serve their communities, Martinez maintains an extensive pro bono and civic portfolio. She is a longtime board member of ¡Adelante Latina!, where she recently helped guide the nonprofit through a strategic acquisition to sustain its support for college-bound high school students, and she also serves on the boards of the Hippodrome Foundation and the Francis D. Murnaghan, Jr. Appellate Advocacy Fellowship. Through her mentorship of junior associates and local students alike, Martinez remains a tireless advocate for the transformative power of education and the pursuit of justice.
