Quantum company to build facility in MD innovation district

The Capital of Quantum (CoQ), a statewide initiative that coordinates, promotes, connects and invests in the region’s quantum ecosystem, announced June 15 that U.K. company Quantum Motion will establish a facility in Discovery District Maryland.

Discovery District Maryland is based in College Park, accommodating more than 60 companies, federal agencies, academic research institutes, labs and collaborative spaces. 

According to a release, Quantum Motion joins an expanding roster of global quantum leaders at the heart of Maryland’s dynamic quantum ecosystem. CoQ said it is building out designated space for Quantum Motion within the same deep tech facility that is home to IQM’s first U.S.-based Quantum Technology Center and Microsoft‘s Quantum Research Center. 

“Quantum Motion’s decision to locate here — alongside IonQ, IQM, Microsoft, and a growing community of quantum leaders — is a reflection of the momentum this ecosystem has built,” CoQ Director Corey Stambaugh said. “We are proud to invest in their presence and to support the important work they will do here.”

Specializing in the development of full-stack silicon CMOS quantum computers, Quantum Motion has set international research and development initiatives in motion spanning London, Sydney and Spain. 

“Maryland’s Discovery District represents an ideal launchpad for our US operations,” said Hugo Saleh, president and CCO of Quantum Motion. 

“This new base will accelerate the delivery of Quantum Motion’s technologies to commercial and public sector clients alike, and strengthen our ability to partner with DARPA and other US government agencies on mission-critical initiatives.”

Anchored in Discovery District Maryland, CoQ Initiative is a five-year, $1 billion public-private partnership with the State of Maryland, the University of Maryland and private-sector partners. Located steps from UMD, the innovation hub is evolving to include housing, transit, recreation and public spaces, a CoQ release says.
