United Therapeutics’ earnings soar (access required)

United Therapeutics Corp., of Silver Spring, a specialty drug maker that develops and markets treatments for unmet medical needs of patients with chronic and life-threatening conditions, reported first-quarter net income totaled $137.5 million, or $2.43 per diluted share, an increase of more than 120 percent compared to the $62.3 million, or $1.19 per diluted share, reported in the prior-year period.

Howard Bancorp’s 1Q earnings decrease (access required)

Howard Bancorp Inc., of Ellicott City, the parent company of Howard Bank, reported lower earnings for the first quarter of 2014. The company posted net income available to common shareholders of $235,000, or 6 cents per diluted share, compared to $414,000, or 10 cents per diluted share, for the year-ago period.
