Maryland Manufacturers to Consolidate Lobbying Efforts

<TAB>Many Maryland manufacturers are on a crusade to seek better representation in Annapolis and improve their image throughout the state. <@SM><@SM><TAB>A newly formed umbrella trade group, the Maryland Manufacturing Council, will seek closer ties with legislators on behalf of half a dozen or so established manufacturing entities. They include the Regional Manufacturing Institute, which promotes competitiveness; the Maryland Industrial Group, which focuses on energy matters; and the Chemical Industry Council, which represents chemical companies in the state.

Hospitals’ Financial Outlook Poor

<TAB>Financial woes for Maryland hospitals worsened in fiscal 2000 for the fourth consecutive year, according to data released yesterday by the Association of Maryland Hospitals and Health Systems.<@SM><@SM><TAB>More than two-thirds of Maryland’s hospitals saw their operating margins — the amount of money left after expenses are subtracted from patient-care revenues — drop to an average of .65 percent for the year ended June 30, down from 1.93 percent for the previous year.

Horse Believed To Have Virus First in Delaware

<br /><br />A horse may have Delaware’s first reported case of the West Nile virus, which killed seven people and sickened 62 last year in the New York metropolitan area, state health officials said.<br /><br />Final test results to confirm the virus are anticipated within two weeks, said Allison Taylor Levine, a spokeswoman with the Division of Public Health.
