The learning commons and courtyard is a multipurpose space used by students and guests at John Carroll School in Harford County. The fully renovated courtyard is located at the center of the school and is part of the school’s original intent that students interact with beauty and nature every day.
Renovations to the courtyard included removing deteriorating asphalt that was replaced with bluestone, updated landscaping and the addition of a permanent grill station for cookouts and gatherings.
Adjacent to the courtyard is the new Learning Commons which reflects the school’s college preparatory focus and mirrors space often found on college campuses. It provides students with individual and collaborative work areas, space to relax and a stunning view.
The floor design helps draw the viewer’s eyes to the courtyard through floor-to-ceiling windows and features the school logo in the center.
The Learning Commons and Courtyard is truly the heart of the school located directly in the center of the physical building. The courtyard can be accessed from three sides – one from the cafeteria, one adjacent to the learning commons and one connecting the cental hallway with access to both academic and student services wing.
The space helped the school in implementing its COVID-19 protocols as it has utilized the space for a variety of reasons. Students can safely gather in the space through while remaining distanced thanks to moveable seating. The outdoor courtyard allows a place for students to take mask breaks during the day.
