The In The Lead: Best Family-Owned Business special section (and online product) recognizes family-owned businesses that demonstrate success across any of a broad spectrum of criteria.

The businesses highlighted in this list are contributing in many ways to the economic success we see in our state.

Family-owned businesses face lots of challenges. Technological changes. Competition from well-financed corporate chains. Succession issues.

To quality for recognition, a company must be entirely or substantially owned by a family and based in Maryland or operate extensively in Maryland. It can be a franchise or subsidiary of a national or regional company as long as the local operation is family-owned.

Recommendations for the 2026 list are due by Aug. 26.
