Skidmore & Alderson
History seems to be repeating itself at a law firm in Cumberland. In the experience of Robert Alderson, partner at Skidmore & Alderson, PA, that’s a good thing.
In 1988, the University of Maryland graduate moved from practicing law in Baltimore to helping steer a firm that combines “big-city experience with small-town attitude and service” where he grew up. “I learned a lot and had great experiences in Baltimore, but I was ready to come home.” Alderson recalled. Despite some admitted concerns whether such a move would work out financially, Alderson said there’s been little reason to second-guess his decision, in part because of the welcoming and mentoring he received in his earliest days of practicing law in Cumberland.
“(My partner) Greg Skidmore was wonderful when we came back; he really made my wife and I feel good and comfortable, that we made the right decision,” Alderson said. Nearly 33 years after being admitted into the Maryland Bar, he now relishes playing the role of mentor. The firm’s newest associate, Wayne Heavener, is walking a similar line.
“I encouraged Wayne that coming back to Cumberland to practice was a good idea,” Alderson said. “When he was in high school, I coached him on a state semifinal mock trial team — now he’s coaching the mock trial team. That relationship has been very fulfilling; he’s a great kid and a great lawyer.”
