Carmalita March-Harris is a third-generation funeral director and embalmer with March Funeral Homes in Reisterstown, which her grandparents founded 60 years ago in their East Baltimore row home. The business has seven funeral homes serving Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, and March-Harris is general manager and supervising mortician at three of the seven funeral homes.

“The success of my family’s business began with my grandparents’ belief that everyone deserves a dignified funeral,” March-Harris said. “The funeral homes were their ministry. It was sincere and it is at the root of how we serve our communities today.”

March-Harris also designs and produces a free community inspiration calendar every year and more than 100,000 are distributed throughout the region. In addition, she is COO for the Thelma March Scholarship Foundation, which provides four-year scholarships to two students in need every year, and she is a volunteer at Roberta’s House, a family grief support center that provides counseling services.

This year, March-Harris received a leadership award from 100 Black Women in Funeral Service and in 2015 was honored with the Community Partner Award from the Frederick Douglass Alumni Association.

“I have been blessed with a rich heritage and legacy, and I value what went into creating it. I know what I need to do to carry it forward for my children and the community at large,” she said.
