Director of Marketing Communications
As Goucher College’s director of marketing communications, Kathy Michel gets to interact with students, faculty and staff. “I feel like the most rewarding part of my job is that you are helping students make big decisions by showcasing Goucher in a positive light,” she said. “To me it is exciting when you can try new things and are allowed to try new things and Goucher has allowed me to do that, which is something I truly appreciate.”
Michel was first drawn to the communications world by her mother, a former newspaper reporter. Michel herself became a television reporter, first in Texas and later in Denver, where she won an Emmy. One of her proudest career moments, she said was producing a TV show that eventually beat Oprah Winfrey’s show in the Denver market.
Michel recently became a board member for The First Tee of Greater Baltimore which introduces the sport to youth. “To me, it is all about the leadership skills and the life skills that these kids are learning,” she said. She has seen 2016 as a year for women and hopes this new role will allow her to help young women make great strides.
In 2012, Michel became a board member for a nonprofit created to honor her late father, The G.L. Vitale Family Foundation. Based in Illinois, the organization bestows grants to local groups to benefit the community. “The most rewarding part is that you are giving back to a beloved community and you are seeing the impact through the faces of all the people you have touched,” she said.
