Ruth O. Katz
Community Association Attorney
Lerch, Early & Brewer, Chtd.
A few months ago, Ruth O. Katz would have said her most significant professional accomplishment was stepping in to co-chair her law firm’s community association practice after a senior partner left unexpectedly. Katz herself had only recently been named partner, but didn’t think twice about leading – she wanted to make sure the firm’s clients were still served effectively.
Today, Katz said her most significant accomplishment is continuing to meet the legal needs of those clients after her recent diagnosis and ongoing treatment for thyroid cancer, all the while raising her family.
Even before her diagnosis, Katz supported cancer research and organized a team for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walks for breast cancer.
“I got involved because my mother had breast cancer. My team has not only raised a lot of money, but also awareness by walking the streets of Boston, Philadelphia, San Diego, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C.”
Now she also wants to help others with thyroid cancer. “I’ve been amazed to discover how many people have been touched by it, and I am looking to join the movement to raise awareness for this disease.”
In 2014, Katz won Maryland Advocate of the Year Award from the Washington Metropolitan Chapter of the Community Associations Institute and currently chairs the group’s communications council.
