Sarah B. Kahl, an estate planning attorney with Venable LLP in Baltimore, welcomes the challenge of accepting leadership roles in her profession and community.

“In my work, I noticed there was a need for connecting women in the financial services industry, so I created Baltimore Women Leaders in Tax and Finance, which has networking events with over 50 women attending and a LinkedIn group so women in the field can connect,” she said. “I believe that women create stronger communities when we have each other for support and mentorship.”

Kahl also set up a networking group with others from the personal financial planning section of the American Institute of CPAs. “When I discovered there were professionals who wanted to network with each other, I made that happen by setting up a group,” she said. “I have been leading the group for three years and it grows every year.”

Her first community leadership role was leading the drive to get her neighborhood, Rodgers Forge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was listed in 2009. “I had to communicate with neighbors and grant-makers, and at times, had to resolve conflicts, but I loved the feeling of doing something good for the community.”
