Melanie Shapiro

Chief Attorney, Baltimore City Juvenile Division
Maryland Office of Public Defender

Melanie Shapiro has served as chief attorney with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender since 2011.

She started as a supervising attorney and quickly was promoted to chief attorney in the Juvenile Court Division in Baltimore City.

“I have improved the quality of representation provided by my office,” Shapiro said. “I implemented a holistic model of defense for children, and through individual case advocacy and system reform, reduced the number of children unnecessarily securely detained.”

Shapiro also was appointed earlier this year by Gov. Larry Hogan to the Juvenile Grant Planning and Review Council, which is affiliated with the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention.

She also is a member of the Family League of Baltimore’s Youth Justice and Equity Council, the Baltimore City Teen Court Advisory Board and the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative.
