The personal finance website NerdWallet.com, which prides itself on number-crunching, has done the math on matrimonial equality<\/a> and determined just how much each state stands to gain from recognizing same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s trickier than you might think. While \u201cmany states where same-sex marriage is legal\u201d \u2014 like Maryland \u2014 \u201chave seen an economic boost as couples plan their unions,\u201d the study notes, that increase reflects an inflated number \u201cdue to pent-up demand.\u201d On the other hand, many of those first marriages were quickie, courthouse affairs. Later ceremonies may well be more lavish.<\/p>\n

Other factors include the state\u2019s self-identified LGBT population, the state\u2019s overall marriage rate, and the cost of an average wedding within its boundaries.<\/p>\n

So how did Maryland do? NerdWallet estimates an economic impact of $52.7 million a year. While that\u2019s nowhere near California\u2019s $414.3 million or the $217.6 million estimated for Texas, it\u2019s good enough to put Maryland in the top third.<\/p>\n
