More than half of all foster youths in Maryland are well into their teens and fast approaching the day when they age out of foster care, according to Maryland CASA Association.<\/a>\u00a0 To ease the transition into independent living, Maryland CASA is planning its first-ever Foster Youth Summit, Pathways to Independence \u2014 a one-day event where foster youths over age 16 and their Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers can learn about the services and resources available to help them.<\/p>\n

The organization also hopes to distribute a \u201cKey Essentials Toolkit,\u201d designed to meet basic needs of independent living, to each of the youths in attendance \u2013 and for that, it needs help from local businesses and distributors.<\/p>\n

So far, Maryland CASA has toothbrushes and dental hygiene items from SunStar G.U.M. Brand and snack packages from New Jersey-based Boxed Wholesalers — but it still needs other personal hygiene items, household items like dish soap and dish towels, pots and pans and utensils, and school or office supplies like flash-drives, planners\/calendar books and pens and paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese young people often don\u2019t have parents or other caring adults in their lives to help them set up their first apartment or go off to college,\u201d said Patrick Seidl, Maryland CASA\u2019s development and communications associate, in an email announcing the initiative.<\/p>\n

The summit is Feb. 28 at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, and while that may seem like it\u2019s a long time from now, time has a way of slipping by.<\/p>\n
