I was honored to be one of four Girl Scout CEOs from across the United States invited to participate in the development of a new leadership program model for the National Girl Scout Movement. This new model is being introduced throughout the United States, with final implementation scheduled for 2010. The new program replaces the model implemented in the 1960s.

Although JFGH’s board and numerous elected officials were initially not in favor of the plan, I played a pivotal role in advocating for the closure of Maryland’s Great Oaks Center [a state residential facility] and ensured that clients made a safe transition to new homes. Subsequent to five such residents’ joining JFGH, we expanded our services to include persons with very significant intellectual and/or physical disabilities.

My work promotes the growth of giving circles as a vehicle to engage individuals, specifically women, to improve their communities. I currently coordinate a group of 25-plus circles in our region and serve as a national spokesperson on giving circles. I also helped create a national Web-based giving circle toolkit. In addition I have written four national reports, as well as dozens of published articles, and have co-authored several books, including the forthcoming “Women’s Philanthropy: Bolding Shaping a Better World.”

Professionally, my most significant accomplishment is successfully creating and managing the process that moved $100 million into the community to benefit both businesses and residents over a 10-year period. Despite limited fanfare, the endeavor was one of the most successful of its kind in the country and currently has a financial return on investment of $10 million to $12 million, which is still being reinvested into the Baltimore community.
Personal song: My song is “The Impossible Dream.” It best describes who I am, my beliefs and my behavior starting as a toddler, when I would take on kids twice my size and age to defend a sibling.

Being a voice for the voiceless has provided me an enormous sense of professional accomplishment. This multilayered endeavor requires building relationships with police departments, medical professionals, victim advocates, government agencies, social workers and the Sexual Assault Center’s professionals. This building of relationships is one ingredient that has enabled me to navigate the criminal justice system to achieve one form of justice for my victim-survivors.

I like to help kids reach their potential. I teach and try to give students a sense of what it takes to be successful. For four years I have run a Business Plan class and competition that have taught students how to start a business. Many since have done so. I also consult and guest lecture, and I try to spread the word about being your own boss, making your own decisions and being able to control your own destiny.

I am currently mentoring the Single Carrot Theatre, a three-year-old Baltimore performing group. I have advised them on fundraising and audience development; organized a dinner and performance for 30 potential donors; and guided these young people on solicitation follow-up. As a result, their operating budget grew from $0 to $120,000. I also introduced them to foundation and civic leaders. Recently, their former artistic director was appointed executive director of The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance.

Professionally, I consider my most significant accomplishment to be taking a fledgling start-up company, with significant financial and operational challenges, and making it into a mission-critical, financially successful, high-performing health management company. In doing this, I made a major career transition, stepping out of a legal role into management, and I learned “from scratch” business operations, information systems, strategic planning and financial management.

I was the first female officer of the National Beer Wholesalers Association. It is made up of all the beer distributors from every brand across the United States. I successfully held each officer seat before being elected the first female chairman in 2006. We had a banner year. We also managed to work with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to pass the first-ever national legislation, called STOP, to work to halt underage drinking and driving.

As part of the Appalachian Service Project, I spent three weeks in Appalachia as a leader for teens from my church. I was able to share the importance of giving back to others in need and to show just how much fun you can have while doing it. ASP assists families to make their homes warmer, safer and drier. While I technically may have been the mentor, I truly was inspired by the young people and look forward to my next week, in June.

I had a challenging childhood, which included being given up for adoption and then being adopted into an abusive and unhappy household. My parents divorced and I was raised dirt poor by a single working mother. I worked numerous jobs to finance my private high school and college and graduated with top grades. I have managed to build a strong family, a long-term marriage, great friendships and a successful business despite the odds.

Since I moved back to Baltimore 19 years ago, I have made the decision to help improve access for underserved populations. This goal has been achieved by strategic efforts on my part to create and provide significant funding for “A Teams” (academic, art and athletic after-school activities for middle school students) and by promoting and helping fund free admission to the Baltimore Museum of Art.

After 15 years of steady growth as a practicing lawyer in Baltimore, I took enormous financial and emotional risks: I left a safe and familiar environment and moved to New York to take on a very different organizational role. In addition, I co-founded a business. [Then] I realized Baltimore was where I belonged and I returned. The most significant accomplishments to me are the many rewarding relationships I have forged and nurtured over the years at all levels of civic, philanthropic and business leadership.

Safely reducing the number of Maryland children in foster care by nearly 20 percent is my most significant professional accomplishment. More children are now placed with permanent, loving families. I also led DHR’s effort to transform Maryland’s complicated group home industry, resulting in a 40 percent reduction in group home placements, an increase in the quality of care for children and a reduction in costs to the state.

While I am proud that during my 10-year tenure at Salisbury the quality and reputation of the institution has grown considerably, my most significant accomplishment is probably having promoted diversity issues on campus and beyond. Our faculty, staff and student body are now much more representative of the demographics of our state and the nation, and the campus has become more open and inclusive. In turn, this has meant that many individuals have been provided with opportunities they might otherwise not have had.

As a parent of a dyslexic son, I was co-founder of a program at the Waldorf School that helped to bring a better understanding of this condition. Up to that point the school had no standardized method for addressing these issues. Personally, I believe that this program, which helped the school secure an excellent tutor, had a tremendous impact on my son and other students with similar challenges. I am very proud that the program still continues at the school.

Serving as budget secretary and chief fiscal adviser to two Maryland governors, both of whom faced considerable fiscal challenges during their terms, is my most significant professional accomplishment. I am proud to have been a part of the teams that helped Maryland manage these crises.

My most significant professional accomplishment was being appointed chair of the Conference of Orphans’ Court Judges by Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert M. Bell. With support from Judge Bell and other judges, this situation was changed during my chairmanship. Now, every Orphans’ Court judge must take two days of continuing education each year.

My greatest professional accomplishment is being elected to the American College of Dentists. It is the oldest national honorary organization for dentists, and fewer than 4 percent of dentists are elected to the group. Also, Baltimore magazine named me northern Baltimore’s best pediatric dentist in its April 2010 issue.

I developed DTP from a stagnant organization that tutored only 40 individuals in 2000 to the success it is today. DTP today tutors 280 individuals and is recognized as a leader in the field. We work with children and adults who are dyslexic or have a language-based learning disability. I am particularly proud of the summer camp program that I have developed and obtained funding for. In 2009 we were able to send 73 low-income dyslexic children to summer camps at private schools for dyslexic children.

In retrospect, I shake my head in disbelief, because who would think that a little girl with Pennsylvania coal-town roots would end up being invited to Dubai to mentor women who want to own their own businesses or to counsel Fortune 500 companies about social networking? Being recognized by USA Today, Inc. magazine, Entrepreneur’s StartUps magazine, Government Executive Magazine and BusinessWeek.com is mind-boggling.

I co-led Maryland’s effort and served on the national committee that revolutionized access to help in America, simplifying it to one easy number: 2-1-1. People find help 24/7/365 in 150 languages on issues from housing, food and utilities to suicide and domestic violence. This was a transformation with national and local impact. 2-1-1 also serves as a powerful barometer of human need, informing funding decisions and directing human services to make the greatest impact.
Personal song: “You Get What You Give” by the New Radicals contains a lesson for life: live it fully and believe in yourself. We all have a unique “song” inside us to share with others. Packed with hope and rhythm, the song makes me start dancing whenever I hear it.

While employed by Carroll County Bank and Trust Company, I developed and implemented all policies and procedures to create a commercial lending and credit services department. This involved establishing all credit underwriting criteria, training staff and lenders, and creating lending policies and procedures, as well as providing documentation and support services. I was later promoted to chief lending officer, with total responsibility for commercial, retail and mortgage lending activities. I am now using this experience in my current job.

A temporary employee of mine, Morianna Lee, was nationally recognized by then-Vice President Al Gore’s 1998 Welfare-To-Work Coalition to Sustain Success. I was then asked to address a national audience live at the White House on behalf of ACT’s partnership with the YMCA in transitioning local welfare recipients into the workforce. We provided Mori’s transportation, work clothes and day care so she could work.

In 2008 I was asked to sit on PNC’s employee resource group. This was an outgrowth of PNC’s diversity efforts. Twenty-five women were selected to come together to work for 18 months to identify key initiatives that could be implemented to increase our acquisition and retention of talented senior women. Our service culminated with a presentation to our CEO and management committee. To date, 80 percent of our recommendations have been implemented.

In early 2008 I found it difficult to maintain a stand-alone Saab dealership. I approached one of the local dealerships about the possibility of merging our operations. After months of analysis, we found that our organizations would complement each other very well. In August 2008 I merged Saab of Baltimore with Anderson of Hunt Valley. I became a partner in the new organization, and we have continued to grow our business even in these adverse economic times.

I remember the day I told my parents I was going to start my own company; I’d gotten a similar reaction years earlier when I told them I was leaving my position at Johns Hopkins University: “But you get great benefits and job security there. What are you thinking?” However, my parents also taught me to be independent and to follow my heart, even if the odds were it would get broken along the way.

In April 2006 my husband and I had triplets. (We already had a small child.) Then, in the summer of 2008, I lost my job, along with 900 colleagues. For the first time I saw the impact of my years in the Baltimore community as a business professional and community volunteer. Those whom I had touched created a safety net for my family and me. I was humbled by the response and deeply touched by the efforts of those surrounding me.
