UMBC, Naval Academy join forces for cybersecurity research

U.S. Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Admiral Ted Carter, left, and UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski will sign a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement to support future partnerships, beginning with five cybersecurity projects. This collaboration has its roots in Admiral Jonathan Greenert's 2014 visit to UMBC, which illuminated the institutions' mutual strengths and interests in cybersecurity. The initial collaborative projects involve areas from tactile authentification for mobile devices to detecting anomalies in cyber-physical systems to securing cloud services using policy-based approaches. Officials from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the U.S. Naval Academy said Tuesday that the schools will collaborate on cybersecurity research efforts. "The Naval Academy has wonderful researchers and so do we," said UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski, who co-signed a research and development agreement Tuesday with Vice Admiral Ted Carter, the academy's superintendent. "We're collaborating to build strength for America," Hrabowski said. Carter has wanted to build a partnership between the two institutions since he became superintendent nearly a year ago, he said.
