Legg Mason assets under management up $24B for quarter
Legg Mason, Inc., the Baltimore-based asset manager, said in a statement Monday that on a preliminary basis, its assets under management as of Dec. 31, 2013, were $680 billion, up from $656 billion at the end of the third quarter and $649 billion at the end of 2012.

Rockville-based Argan’s profit rises in first quarter
Argan Inc., of Rockville, which primarily designs and builds energy plants, reported net income for its fiscal first quarter ended April 30 rose 60.5 percent, to $6.9 million, or 45 cents per diluted share, from $4.3 million, or 34 cents per diluted share, for the year-ago period.
