Tilghman Island Seafood is a USDA-certified blue catfish processing facility on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. A lifelong waterman, owner John Hargrove worked as a traditional seafood buyer and processor of oysters and crabs. After a money-losing 2022 crab season, he converted one of his two historic waterfront packing houses into the catfish plant, taking on the invasive species to help protect the Chesapeake Bay.

Hargrove has dedicated more than a decade to the spat-on-shell oyster restoration program. In August 2024, he received the Congressional Record and Citation Award, Governor’s Citation, Senatorial Citation and House of Delegate Citation for his work to preserve an endangered ecosystem.

Honoree profiles were written using an artificial intelligence program and, when available, supported by forms completed by the honoree. Each profile was reviewed, fact-checked and edited for accuracy by The Daily Record’s editorial staff.
