Title
CEO

A graduate of the University of Maryland and the University of Baltimore School of Law, Gene M. Ransom III has led MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, as CEO since 2009. Under his leadership, MedChi has grown its membership and developed the Episode Quality Improvement Program and the Maryland Primary Care Program, positioning the organization as a leader in physician-led, value-based healthcare.

Ransom holds a Certified Association Executive designation and teaches health law and ethics as an adjunct professor at Stevenson University. He also serves on the boards of Medical Mutual Insurance Company of Maryland and the AMA ARC Executive Board.

What is the biggest challenge facing your industry today?

Maryland’s biggest healthcare challenge is the uncertainty surrounding the transition of the AHEAD Model in 2028, particularly as the system moves away from hospital rate-setting by the state to a bifurcated system. At the same time, physician payment remains structurally inadequate, with Maryland among the lowest-paying states, creating real risks for access, workforce stability and independent practice viability. This is compounded by increasing health insurance market concentration, which gives a small number of payers outsized leverage over rates and administrative policies. Together, these pressures threaten to destabilize access to care unless AHEAD’s next phase more directly addresses physician sustainability.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

No money, no mission. As the CEO, you need to focus on the finances.

How do you define success?

“Success is doing the most good, for the most people, as often as possible.”
