On the Move, 1/4: Beatty honored for human rights work

Carol A. Beatty, executive director of The Arc of Howard County, recently received the Howard County Human Rights Commission’s 2011 Human Rights Award for “exemplary citizenship, dedicated leadership and outstanding achievement” that has advanced human rights for all residents of Howard County. Since 1993, Beatty has overseen the nonprofit organization, which provides advocacy, housing, recreational services, and employment training, placement and on-the-job support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as respite care for their families. She was especially cited for The Arc’s residential and employment supports, which have furthered The Arc’s goal of inclusion in community life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Jamie Czajkowski has joined the technology solutions group of Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, of Baltimore. Czajkowski has a background in technology and marketing. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in marketing from Towson University.

Awards

MAC has been selected for the 2011 Best of Timonium Award in the Health Clubs & Gyms category by the U.S. Commerce Association. The award program recognizes local businesses throughout the country for marketing success in their local community and business category.

Education

Baltimore County Public Schools recently presented awards to Tom “TK” Kuegler, co-founder and general partner of Wasabi Ventures, and Cindy Davis, division director of Visual Sound/Kunz AV, for their contributions to the school system. Kuegler donated the PbWorks Wiki Enterprise Campus Solution, which is valued at $90,000. His company is a venture capital, incubator, and consulting firm that specializes in building and advising early stage technology companies. He is the author of Web Advertising and Marketing and Entrepreneur’s Bible–A Guidebook for the Business Life. Kuegler serves on the board of sponsors of Sellinger School of Business at Loyola University Maryland. Davis has been in the audiovisual business for 18 years, dealing exclusively with the education sector. From 2003 until the sale of the company in 2009, she was president of Kunz Inc.; she continues in her present role as division director with Visual Sound/Kunz AV. Davis was honored for the many hours of service she has given to Baltimore County Public Schools, following her father’s example in helping with audio and visual learning. She recently was appointed as the first business representative to the Maryland Society for Educational Technology board of directors.

Fire Safety

Koffel Associates recently made these promotions: Patricia H. Zimmerman is now support services principal; Lennon A. Peake and Jennifer L. Frecker are now managers for fire protection; and Sarina L. Hart is now senior fire protection engineer. Also, President William E. Koffel was recently appointed to the NFPA Committee for Commissioning and Integrated Testing of Fire Protection Systems; fire protection engineer Mark Buschman was appointed as an alternate to that committee. Koffel Associates recently relocated to Columbia.

Health Care

Colleen Cusick, director of materials management at Johns Hopkins Hospital, recently was elected chair and Lionel Weeks, vice president of facilities at LifeBridge Health, was elected vice chair of the Maryland Health Care Sustainability Leadership Council. Cusick was co-founder and chair of Johns Hopkins Hospital’s green team, and has worked with Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment, an initiative housed at University of Maryland School of Nursing. Weeks has been involved with the greening and sustainability efforts of LifeBridge Health for the past four years. The council was established in 2011 to provide guidance and advice to hospital leaders who want to reduce waste while increasing the use of fresh local foods.

Marketing

Nick Weidmann has been hired as an assistant account executive by Nevins & Associates, of Hunt Valley. Weidmann previously worked in the corporate marketing and communications practice at APCO Worldwide, and in the crisis and litigation group at Levick Strategic Communications in Washington, D.C. He has a master’s in management and public relations from University of Maryland University College, and a bachelor’s degree in communications with a concentration in public relations and a B.A. in history from University of Maryland, College Park.

Networking

The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce has started a women’s group, the Women Balancing Life and Business Committee. Chamber Director of Member Services Donna Gallagher and member Dawn Goldberg of Write Well University developed the committee to serve female chamber members with programs and topics addressing all aspects of a women’s life. Goldberg was named chair of the committee.
