The vibrancy of Baltimore is palpable to Christy Wyskiel, and from her desk at Johns Hopkins University it’s easy to see why.

Wyskiel is the senior adviser in matters of innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship. She heads up Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, which includes technology transfer, the FastForward innovation hubs and commercial partnerships.

In the last fiscal year, Johns Hopkins had $700 million in venture funding coming into its companies, up considerably from about $50 million five years ago.

Since taking her position five years ago, Wyskiel has completed the buildout of two FastForward innovation hubs as well as the new FastForwardU, a student-only innovation hub intended to help students bring their ideas from the dorm or classroom to market.

She also co-founded two Baltimore-based companies with Johns Hopkins faculty members, an experience that guides her today as she provides resources to entrepreneurs and faculty innovators.

She serves on the board of the Abell Foundation. Ten years ago she and her husband started an event called Baltimore’s Next Generation Investing Event, which raises money for K-8 education in Baltimore.

“The work that I’m doing, I hope, here at Hopkins will change the skyline of Baltimore,” Wyskiel said. “And the work I’m doing in the community, I hope, will make it possible for everyone to participate.”
