More than 68 percent of respondents to The Daily Record’s Pulse Poll think Gov. Larry Hogan should run for president. More than two thirds of that group things Hogan should run for president even if President Trump doesn’t run. Just under a third of respondents said he should not run.

The governor said that he has been approached by critics of President Donald Trump about getting into the race and that he plans more travel outside of Maryland to hear voters’ concerns. While he said he’d be willing to run if his candidacy benefited the Republican Party, Hogan is not in a hurry to throw his name into the ring, saying he doesn’t want to undertake “a suicide mission.”

Should Gov. Larry Hogan seek the Republican nomination for president?

COMMENTS

The 50% of the country who isn’t already committed to Trump or progressive, desperately needs and wants a moderate. The Governor is that and has a proven record of working across the aisle and getting things done. Wouldn’t that be a welcome change.

Yes by all means. Please give us another choice. Anyone with SOME credibility.

— Dion Guthrie

It’s worth a try to get rid of Donald Trump.

— Allan Henson

Political suicide. And the fact that he’s even considering changes my once-favorable opinion of him.

— Shannon Turner

I would rather he run for Senate.

— John Ashley

It is important that normal Republicans take back their party from Trump.

— Adrienne Bennett

Would be 10x better than what we have now.

— Gary Vornheder

Governor Hogan has done a wonderful job in Maryland even though it is ruled by Democrats but I think he should not get into the quagmire of national politics.

—  Patricia Mager

Given that Trump is already running, I think Hogan should wait and run instead in 2024. It’s not good for Hogan’s future prospects to be defeated in the primaries, which is most likely if Trump continues to run (which he will barring unforeseen circumstances).

— David Graves

I don’t want to squander our governor on a abortive bid for the White House.

— Wallace Kleid

We need a real Republican running for President.

— Richard Gordon

Gov. Hogan has no name recognition and no major accomplishments to his credit that will excite voters. While I have voted for him and believe he has done a good job for MD I don’t think he has the credentials to withstand the withering attacks Trump would initiate.
