A Rockville research, consulting and technical services firm has been awarded a $2.05 million contract from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to evaluate opioid prescribing policies and guidelines.

Abt Associates, with the American Medical Group Association as a partner, will evaluate medical practice guidelines and policies for chronic pain management, opioid prescribing and medication-assisted treatment.

The three-year evaluation will analyze how practices and policies affect pain-management practices, clinician-patient communication and patient outcomes.

Sarah Shoemaker-Hunt, principal associate at Abt, who holds a doctorate from the University of Minnesota and a doctor of pharmacy degree from Creighton University, said in a news release that the project will explore effects on clinical practice and outcomes and benefits and unintended consequences for patients and clinicians.
