Department of Radiation Oncology Chair
UMD School of Medicine

regine-williamDr. William Regine is the Isadore and Fannie Schneider Foxman Chair and Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and the chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology.

His department has achieved a Top 5 national ranking in receiving research funding from the National Institutes of Health and also recognized at home and abroad in the fields of gastrointestinal and central nervous system malignancies and in the use of stereotactic radiosurgery.

Regine is also the executive director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC), the first facility of its kind in the Baltimore-Washington region. The center sees nearly 2,000 patients a year and treats their solid tumors with “pencil beam” technology.

He is also co-editor of scholarly book, “Principles and Practices of Stereotactic Radiosurgery” and a co-inventor of the first of its kind treatment device completely dedicated to the stereotactic radiation treatment of early stage breast , known as the GammaPod.

During the pandemic, many laboratories at the University of Maryland School of Medicine were shut down, while some clinical trials were put on hold. Regine and his team were able to redefine parameters to allow research to continue safely. “These new safety parameters in place allowed us to continue with multiple clinical trials, including at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC),” he said.

He was also impressed by how the University of Maryland Medical System and the state’s medical school were able to implement a unified response to the pandemic.
