Medical Director
Kahlert Regional Cancer Center

Dr. Flavio Kruter, M.D., started his medical career at the Faculdade de Medicina, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and completed his fellowship in hematology and oncology at the George Washington University Medical Center and the University of Maryland.
Kruter has been practicing in Carroll County since 1993 where he is medical director of the William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center at Carroll Hospital in Westminster.
“I knew my path was oncology because I wanted to work with different organs while helping people fight cancer,” Kruter said in a tribute booklet published by the hospital. “During my training, I noticed there wasn’t anyone in Westminster doing full-time oncology, so felt called to bring the best of oncology to the Carroll County community.”
For the next 30 years, the tribute book noted, “that’s exactly what he’s done.”
Kruter, who plans to retire in June, was featured in the Carroll Hospital’s annual “Gifts of a Lifetime” review in 2022, where he was quoted as saying: “The greatest gift Carroll Hospital has given me is the recognition of my work. You always hope you’re doing the best you can do for your patients, and it’s incredible to see that come to fruition.”
In the same 2022 review, Greg Kahlert, son of the entrepreneur after whom the cancer center is named and head of the Kahlert Foundation, which helps fund Carroll County nonprofits, is quoted as saying: “The greatest gift Carroll Hospital has given to us is the amazing William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center under the leadership of Dr. Kruter. The center has saved so many lives and helped so many families in the community.”
