William Lori

Hei is the former chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine and the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty.
Lori obtained a bachelor’s degree from the Seminary of St. Pius X in Erlanger, Kentucky in 1973; a master’s degree from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg in 1977; and a doctorate in sacred theology from The Catholic University of America in Washington 1982.
He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Washington by Cardinal William Baum in 1977 in St. Matthew Cathedral in Washington. His first assignment was as associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Landover.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career?
To remember how much God loves every person I meet, whether they are lifelong friends, colleagues, parishioners, community members or someone I just met on the street.
What’s been your biggest success?
Attracting dedicated and talented co-workers who are focused on mission and are a joy to work with.
Who have been the biggest mentors in your career?
Cardinal James Hickey, who served as the archbishop of Washington from 1980 to 2001.
What are your hopes for the state or your community this year?
I hope to see us all staying safe and moving past this global pandemic. I also wish great success to the opening of our new school in Baltimore, Mother Lange Catholic School — the first Catholic school to be opened in Baltimore in six decades.
