Maryland’s unemployment rate rises slightly, but still among nation’s lowest
Maryland’s unemployment rate rose from a revised 2.2% in December to 2.3% in January but is the third-lowest rate nationwide, according to preliminary data released Monday by The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The report also showed Maryland’s total jobs increased by 6,800. Sectors that created jobs include the public sector (3,900), leisure and hospitality (2,900), private education and health (1,700), manufacturing (600) and financial activities (100).
Sectors that experienced a decline include mining, logging and construction (1,700), other services (600) and information (100).
The preliminary jobs estimate in December 2023 was also revised upward by 800 jobs from a loss of 3,800 to a decline of 3,000 jobs.
North Dakota has the nation’s lowest unemployment rate at 1.9%, followed by South Dakota at 2.1%. Maryland and Vermont are tied for third at 2.3%. Virginia is 12th nationally at 3% and the District of Columbia is 49th at 5%. Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 5.3%, according to the report.
