MD redistricting lawsuit unsealed; hearing scheduled for later this month
A lawsuit challenging Maryland’s redistricting effort has been unsealed, after The Daily Record published a story Tuesday about it being hidden from the public for days.
The lawsuit by several Republican lawmakers is set for a motions hearing on Aug. 25 in Anne Arundel Circuit Court, according to the unsealed court records. Filed last Thursday, the case had been sealed through Tuesday evening. It challenges a question set to be printed onto millions of ballots next month that would exempt congressional redistricting from certain requirements in the Maryland Constitution.
It was still not clear why the case had been kept hidden for several days. But attorneys had filed a motion to seal the address of one of the plaintiffs, the president of a conservative nonprofit, saying that he receives violent threats. Circuit Judge Robert Thompson ordered the plaintiffs Tuesday to file an affidavit supporting their motion.
A second, similar suit was filed Monday in Dorchester County by Eastern Shore lawmakers.
