The Daily Record wins 13 awards from MDDC Press Association, including 2 Best of Shows

MDDC 2023 Contest Best of Show BadgeThe Daily Record won 13 from the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association (MDDC) in its 2023 awards contest. Winners were announced last week.

The Daily Record won two Best of Show awards, chosen from all of the first-place winners in the seven divisions grouped by total audience numbers.

In 2023, The Daily Record competed in Division B, the second largest. The Daily Record captured five first-place awards and six second-place awards.

Madeleine O’Neill, Rachel Konieczny and Jack Hogan won Best of Show in the Breaking News category for coverage of Washington County Circuit Judge Andrew F. Wilkinson’s murder in October. Kay Kron, Kathleen Malone and the staff won Best of Show for Best Event for the Empowering Women event. 2023 was the event’s inaugural year, recognizing companies and organizations that elevate and support women.

Besides Breaking News and Best Event, first-place winners included: Patrick Brannan and Kathleen Malone in News-driven Special Section for Doing Business in Maryland: Outlook 2024; Brian Compere in General Social Media Reporting for live tweeting the Eye on Annapolis Summit; and the Daily Record Staff for General Web Site Excellence.

MDDC 2023 Contest LogoSecond-place winners included: Kay Kron and the staff in New Business Concept/Wild Card for Empowering Women; Bryan Sears, Patrick Brannan and staff in News-driven Special Section for Eye on Annapolis 2023 Summit; Bryan Sears, Steve Lash, Madeleine O’Neill in Series for Eye on Annapolis Series (2022-2023); Rachel Konieczny in State Government for “Hemmed in by Supreme Court, Md. lawmakers turn focus to gun manufacturer liability;” Madeleine O’Neill in General News Story for “How Baltimore law firms helped diocese manage sex abuse claims;” and Cammie Collier, Angelyn Nye, Patrick Brannan in Custom Publication for Way to Be 2023.

The Daily Record also had two honorable mentions in the Best Moves category. The Best Moves were for the Daily Record’s redesigned website and for the Empowering Women event.

The contest, governed by the Association’s Editorial and Advertising Committees, admitted over 1,550 entries among 86 categories. There were seven divisions in the contest, that group member publications into categories governed by total audience numbers, combining print and digital readership and the number of content producers. One Best in Show award is given in each category across all divisions. These entries were judged by news media professionals at the New Jersey Press Association.
