The In the Lead Best Women-Owned Businesses special section (and online product) recognizes businesses that are owned by women and which demonstrate success across any of a broad spectrum of criteria.
To be named one of the Best Women-Owned Businesses, a company must be entirely or substantially owned by a woman (women) and based in Maryland. It can be a franchise or subsidiary of a national company, too, so long as the local operation is women-owned.
Other criteria:
- Can demonstrate success in the market through growth in revenues or employees.
- Been a trailblazer in a sector traditionally dominated by male-owned companies.
- Recognized as a best workplace because of employee support programs.
- Can show a high level of employee morale.
- Is able to demonstrate strong and consistent community engagement.
- Is recognized within its industry as a leader or as an up-and-coming player.
- Is responsible for a product breakthrough or some other innovation.
