Kimmel Center acquires HD cancer treatment system

The Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Johns Hopkins Hospital announced that its Department of Radiation Oncology has acquired a sophisticated cancer treatment system manufactured by a Swedish company.

The Elekta Versa HD linear accelerator focuses a high-definition, high-precision beam to allow extremely accurate tumor targeting and improved healthy tissue preservation, according to the announcement.

The Versa system expands advanced treatments to a broader spectrum of tumors, and provides more rapid delivery of sophisticated therapies within standard radiation treatment times, officials said in a release.

The cost of the new system, manufactured by Elekta AB, of Stockholm, Sweden, was not disclosed by the Kimmel center.
